Interreg MED Programme: an innovative system of cooperation among different stakeholders for a more integrated Mediterranean

Venue: Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Place du Panthéon, Paris

Universities of the Mediterranean region are already playing a key role in preparing the decision makers of tomorrow, in fostering innovation in all fields and in transferring knowledge beyond national borders. However, they are called to increasingly engage in mutually reinforcing partnerships with public authorities, international organisations, civil society and the private sector to tackle the unprecedented challenges the Mediterranean region is already facing. The Interreg MED Programme is promoting an innovative cooperation architecture that Universities should look at with more attention for its short-term and long-term positive effects. In this framework, public authorities, International Organisations, Universities and NGOs are encouraged to join forces to set the path towards a more sustainable development in our region. Structured around four strategic axes – Natural and Cultural Resources, Low Carbon Economy, Innovation and Governance – Interreg MED Programme’s aim is to create communities of Mediterranean stakeholders who can actively work together to promote territorial cooperation in Europe, even after the formal end of the projects.
